Description: (NBC-TV, 1966-69) Hand-held medical tool, a “portable wound healer”, constructed of black-painted wood with conical tip and sides of machined metal. Measures 6 1/2 in. long. Intended for minor injuries, this tool was created for the Original Series and used in Sickbay. This protoplaser was originally painted red, but was later painted black for use in Star Trek: The Motion Picture, in which configuration it now remains. It can be seen clearly in TMP near the end of the film when Nurse Chapel uses it to examine Spock’s ear. Originally acquired from Dick Rubin, a veteran Hollywood property master who worked on Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
