Star Trek Klingon Tribunal Director's Model
When Star Trek Enterprise needed to recreate the Klingon Tribunal for an episode I served as First AD on, director Jim Conway asked the art department to make him a scale model of the set so he could figure out the limitations of equipment use for the set. The film clips from the feature, Undiscovered Country, simply did not answer the questions he needed. The art team delivered a wonderful scale model, each board cut to scale, showing not only the actual set to be built but also the virtual upper ring, a removable section of the model as show in the photographs. They placed little plastic figures in the center ring for Captain Archer and in one of the galleries for the Klingon extras we would populate the set with. A folded paper represented the curtain behind the Klingon Judge in the real set. In our preperation period major production decisions were made based on this model, most imperitively Jim's decision to block shoot all the tribunal scenes to complete one direction for every scene before turning to shoot another.
